RC21 Conference – Inequalities in the City: Old Issues, New Challenges

We have attended our first conference with the full ERC Food ChariTIES team!

Last week, we attended the RC21 Conference on “Inequalities and the City. Old Issues, New Challenges” in Vienna, and what a great time we had!
Our days were packed with interesting panels, meeting new people, great keynotes, and catching up with colleagues and friends, all perfectly organised and with the University of Vienna and the city as a beautiful backdrop.

Together with Birgit Hoinle, Petra Lütke, and Mario Trifuoggi, Filippo Oncini and Alejandro Ciordia hosted panel #28 on Governing Food Systems: Understanding Food Inequalities and Food Insecurities in the City. We were very happy and inspired by all the presentations and it was great to see connections between the different research subtopics. Our three PhDs, Shiori Hagiwara, Simona Amaro, and Marga ter Maat presented their framework for comparative relational ethnography with which they will start their fieldwork after the summer. Thanks to everyone for all the questions, feedback, and conversations.

Next to our own, we attended many other great panels where we heard discussions on epistemic justice and research-activist collaborations, informality, grassroots resistance, poverty governance, urban timescapes and temporality, multimodal and gamified qualitative methods, the positions of youth in cities, and how to rethink the Global South/North dichotomy. Much food for thought as we continue to develop our own research projects.

We are grateful for all the exchanges and conversations we had and which continued over drinks, dinners, and dancing! Until next time.
